Supporting the Library

Financial Support

Thank you for your interest in supporting the Milan Public Library!  There are a number of ways in which you can support the library through financial donations, which are described below.

Endowment Funds

The Library benefits from the income from four Endowment Funds. As with any endowed fund, the available monies are only those generated by the income on the fund's principle investment each year, which can vary considerably.

  • Carol A. Mohr/Margaret Walls Memorial Fund (supports  equipment, furnishings, books and other items in support of children and youth services).
  • Mildred N. Sheehan Fund (supports the acquisitions of books and videos).
  • Millard and Marie Phillips Fund (supports program development, Genealogy/Local History resources, and expansion of technological tools for staff and community).
  • General Purpose Enrichment Fund (supports general improvement of the library's furnishings and equipment for public use).

Designated Donations

Do you have a special interest that you'd like to support?  Designated donations may be made to support specific areas, such as programming for children and/or adults, specific collections (music, large print, nonfiction, video, etc.).

Book/Media Donations

Thank you for considering donating materials to the Milan Public Library!   We are happy to give you a receipt for tax purposes.

We appreciate your keeping in mind that we are a small library with limited space and staff to handle donations! :)

All items must be in good (saleable) condition.  Please only donate items in a condition that you yourself would purchase.

Donations are accepted on the first two Saturdays of each month (unless we are closed for a holiday).  Saturday hours are 10 am-4 pm.  We can accept a maximum of 2-3 boxes from each donor on any given Saturday.  Library staff are not available to pick up donations from elsewhere.

We are currently accepting (in good condition):

  • Youth related materials (books, DVDs, music, audiobooks) in good condition.
  • Books (fiction or nonfiction) and Music CDs from the past five years.
  • Audiovisual materials (audiobooks on CD, DVDs/BluRays) for all ages, with all discs
  • Magazines may be left on the free shelf in the lobby.

We cannot accept:

  • Damaged, moldy/musty, or dirty books.  These items can be placed in the recycling bin adjacent to City Hall.
  • Books or Music CDs older than 5 years (unless youth).
  • Encyclopedias, Reader’s Digest, condensed books.
  • VHS or Audio Cassette Tapes

Donated items may be:  1) added to the library’s collections, 2) placed for sale in the Friends of the Library sale or 3) donated elsewhere.

Click HERE for a list of other area organizations which accept donations. We recommend calling them in advance to ensure that there are no temporary restrictions in place.

Adopt a Magazine

The Library subscribes to a variety of magazines for all ages.  You can help the library stretch its budget by 'adopting' a magazine for a year for $28 (average subscription cost). Magazines may be sponsored in honor or memory of an individual.   For more information, contact info@milanlibrary.org or give us a call at 734-439-1240.

More Info?

For more information on any of these funds/donation options, please contact Susan Wess, Library Director, at susan.wess@milanlibrary.org or 734-439-1240.  Thank you!
